Ed-K-Photo > 11/26/09 - Wetlands
....
Taking a brief break from the 12 Days of Christmas Cactuses project. Woke up and found a nice foggy morning just begging for some moody images to be made.
Ed-K-Photo > 11/25/09 - The 5th Day of Christmas (Cactuses)
....
From the camera, not Photoshop. The is a reflection made in a piece of silver Mylar. The only thing "real" (not a reflection) is the flower's stamens and pistil coming into the image from top center. The Mylar is on a table top and I'm shooting down. The end of the pistil is about 1/16" above the Mylar.
After you shoot macros, closeups and full view from the top, bottom, front, back and side it's hard to do much more without resorting to things like this - and there are still seven more days to go.
Ed-K-Photo > 11/24/09 - The 4th Day of Christmas (Cactuses)
....
First of all - this is from the camera and not via Photoshop. It uses a technique I call shoot-through. For a shoot-through something is close to the lens (often touching as in this case) between the lens and the subject. The camera is focused on the subject and with a fairly wide open lens (depending on the distances involved) the intervening object takes on the appearance of a colored mist. In this case there were red blossoms and green leaves close to (and against) the lens face and the subject flower was a foot or so away (shot with a 105 mm 1:1 macro lens). The arty frame was included to add to the overall arty effect.
Ed-K-Photo > 11/23/09 - The 3rd Day of Christmas Cactus
....
Day 1 was a representational portrait, a picture for a text on flowers. Day 2 was more abstract with only the pistil recognizable. Today, day 3, it's back to representational with the focus on the Christmas Cactus Flower Pistil and Stamens. A less representational version of the Day 1 & Day 3 images is this one made in 2005 - was and still is one of my favorite floral images (from the camera, no Photoshop) - http://www.pbase.com/ed_k/image/53418237
Ed-K-Photo > 11/22/09 - The 2nd Day of Christmas Cactus
....
An exercise in "working a subject" - 12 different images with a single subject, my Christmas cactus. Yesterday, on day #1, it was a straight "portrait" - the type of image that is appropriate for a descriptive book on flowers. Today we're at the opposite end of the spectrum shooting straight into the end of the blossom and using selective focus to throw everything into a soft blur except for this end piece (added an arty frame just for the heck of it). We're not in Kansas anymore.
Ed-K-Photo > 11/21/09 - Portrait
....
The first fully opened blossom on our Christmas Cactus. Maybe I'll do the Twelve Days of Christmas Cactuses again. Good practice to shoot the same subject a number of times while trying for something different each time.

....
Daily walk - shot with my P&S.
Ed-K-Photo > 11/19/09 - Tile Coasters
....
Coasters made for a recent community craft fair. Made two different sets of 4 with images from the community. One set was our community's landmark 160 year old oak - one view for each of the four seasons. The 2nd set (only 2 shown here) were of landmark community structures (clubhouse & gazebo shown). I made over 20 sets and they all sold within the 1st 2 hours. Very time consuming - about 20-30 minutes per coaster spread over three days - to print a transfer, apply the transfer to the Venetian Stone 4" tile, apply 3 coats of polyurethane with sanding + steel wool between each coat, cutting and gluing a foam back - plus all of the drying time for every step starting with the print. Labor of love - not for money, that's for sure!
Ed-K-Photo > 11/15/09 - Winnie

Happy Birthday. Winnie would have been 13 today. I really miss her - still after over a year.
